Inclement weather-cancellation of classes

The Public Relations Department of the Kansas City, Missouri School District (KCMSD) always seeks to make sure its students, staff and community are well informed about breaking news related to the District. The notification policy for the cancellation of classes due to extreme cold, snow or ice is as follows:

The decision to cancel classes is made by the Superintendent of Schools based on the recommendation of his administrative team, including Facilities, Transportation, Safety and Security and the Executive Cabinet.

The District strives to notify the public of the cancellation of classes as soon as the decision is made. In many cases this notification should occur between 5:30 a.m. and 6 a.m.

Notification of the cancellation of classes will be made to all major radio and television stations. A notification will also be placed on the main page of the District Web site.

If the decision to cancel classes is made during the weekend or 12 hours or less before classes are to occur, an automated phone message will be sent to employees and staff.

School closing information will be broadcast over a cooperative system formed by radio and television stations. Stations in the cooperative include:
KMBC-TV9
KCTV-TV5
WDAF-TV4
KSHB-TV41
KFKF, FM 94.1
WDAF, FM 106.5
KMBZ, AM 980
KCUR, FM 89.3
KBEQ, FM 104.3
KMXV, FM 93.3
The Kansas City Star

Unless covered by a special announcement, a general school closing also includes all special education classes and adult education classes.

If classes are canceled, the following personnel will be on duty unless otherwise stated: all administrators and supervisors, all 12-month employees, all campus officers, all custodial and maintenance staff.

Should early dismissal be necessary during the school day, radio and TV announcements will be made and each school will be notified.
